Will The U.S. Lift The Cuba Cigar Embargo by Dave Dylan

It's a sad thing to open a humidor case and see nothing but cheap American stogies. What about the exotic taste of Cuban cigars? Is it just a dream? Cuban cigars are made from tobacco leaves found exclusively in the Cuban nation. There are many brands available from Cuba, and Cuban cigar rollers are said to be among the best worldwide. All Cuban cigars are labeled Hecho en Cuba or made in Cuba.

Unfortunately, since the 1960s, the possession of Cuban cigars has been illegal in the U.S. Why? In the year 1962, President Kennedy imposed a trade embargo act against Fidel Castro. Premium Cuban cigars were even seized. To this day, they remain illegal on a small technicality. Why? It's certainly not because these cigars have anything questionable in their ingredients.

John F. Kennedy had a beef with Castro's communist regime for quite some time. Back then, at the height of the Cold War, communism was regarded as something evil. It didn't help when Cuba seized control of the island in 1959 and when he supported the U.S.S.R by allowing them the right to create missile bases on the island-so close to U.S. soil. This was interpreted as a major slight against the U.S. and so they increased the pressure. The U.S. even tried to have Castro assassinated!

Why hasn't the trade embargo act been lifted today? Because it would mean supporting communism and supporting a man who was once considered a public enemy of the U.S. The United States has not lightened up on its stance, even after several administration changes. To this day, not only are Cuban cigars banned in the U.S., but acquiring these cigars in any country, if you are a U.S. citizen, is an American crime.

Will this law ever be lifted? It is doubtful, though many cigar loves continue to sign petitions asking the government to reconsider. In addition to the U.S. government, many Cuban exiles similarly want Castro and his communistic regime punished for their tactics. To give Cuba U.S. trading rights would be a reward in terms of economy. We will have to see what becomes of this situation in the years to come. In the meantime, cigar lovers can only dream.
